Upon its debut, GPT was dubbed the “Google Killer” because of the way it could answer questions directly in one go, rather than giving the user multiple pages of search results. Before the emergence of “ChatGPT” in November 2022, “Google” dominated the field of Internet search for 15 years. But this new emergence of artificial intelligence has prompted Google to carefully integrate GPT chat into its engine.
Its director of public affairs, Kent Walker, explained that people began using artificial intelligence through Google 12 years ago, and the company was positively influenced by the development of GBT chat technology in the last year by accelerating its work.
Regarding the current trial that Google is facing in the United States due to the dominant position of the search engine, Walker stressed that they are happy to have shown that users freely choose Google as the first search engine, and this indicates that the company seeks to achieve a balance between innovation and compliance with the laws.
Regarding the future European AI law, the Director expressed his understanding of the proposed approach and noted the need to focus on a proportionate, risk-based response, emphasizing the importance of studying the uses of AI in diverse fields.
Finally, regarding global censorship on the Internet, the director emphasized that Google's primary mission is to make information available to everyone, and despite the challenges and pressures they face from some countries, they are working hard to limit the impact of censorship on their services while maintaining the vision of an open and free Internet.
It is noteworthy that the company that produces GPT chat, Open AI, has received investments worth billions of dollars from Microsoft, which is currently working on including it in its products, such as the Bing search engine and Microsoft Office 365.
